Every four years in Ghana, there is a general election to elect a president and over two hundred parliamentarians to rule the country. Many African countries have very similar agenda, but different dates. The president and the parliamentarians have a duty quite similar to those in Europe and every part of the world: to make laws and project the rule of law as well as leading the people in all aspect of their lives and make their standard of living better.

In some parts of the world, the elected candidates and the president owe it a duty to serve the people with honesty. They tell the electorates what they will do for them if voted to power. If they promise to fight corruption and to raise health care etc, they see to it that they tackle those priorities before they leave office.

It also their duty to see to it that nobody, including themselves gets the opportunity to steal from the state coffers. It is not their intention to use their offices to acquire/amass wealth for themselves. They therefore give very meaningful promises during campaign periods, but not too convincing, too attractive nor too expensive promises, after all they would only be trying to get the mandate to serve their beloved countries and nothing else.

Africa seems to be on the opposite side. When our politicians want the mandate from the electorates, they promise them very expensive things which appear quite impossible to honor. What it means is that it is the power they want AT ALL COST and when they are not able to honor the promises, nobody holds them accountable.

Here in Africa, politicians become too rich too quickly. Unlike Europe and elsewhere, the major aim of people entering into politics is to make money; in fact more and more money. That is why they try all means to get power. Here in Africa, when you gain a political position, ‘you are gone’. There must be a change in the African political terrain.

We want to have trustful leaders who will make it their sole duty to work to help the ordinary man in the street. We vote for them, they become our leaders, they gain riches and they pretend to be too much busy to care for us or even receiving us in their offices. African political leaders would make sure they practically define the vast differences between the ordinary man and themselves.

All I am asking is that, will there ever be a time when political leaders will make good use of their offices and TRULY care for the people who sent them there and who’s betterment they MUST seek?

Why do politicians give very big and vain promises during their campaigns?

Where do politicians get their wealth from so quickly?

Do we need to listen to them and take them serious knowing well that all they want to become is rich and not dedicated service to the people they are to serve?

HOW DO YOU ALSO SEE OUR POLITICIANS AND THEIR CAMPAIGN PROMISES?

Akosua Kwarteng of allegro201@hotmail.com is asking through this site, that……..

Is it justified to spend $1.4 million on medals during the credit crunch? What message is this sending to the country and the rest of the world. Is Ghana really impoverished? We cannot pretend to be poor, running around with a begging bowl in one hand and making highly expensive purchases with the other hand. An apology is due, the rest of the medals should be returned for a refund. Surely, those who made the decision must realise it is a mistake. It would be arrogant and out-of-touch to insist that the recipients deserve expensive medals. Usually, a replica, a token, a gesture should be enough. Why should any of the G8 feel sorry for these so-called impoverished countries? After cancellation of debts, they repay themselves with expensive gifts! Let reason prevail.

Management comprises planning, organizing, resourcing, leading or directing, and controlling an organization (a group of people or entities) or effort for the purpose of accomplishing a goal.

When the African continent was under colonial rule, there was the great feeling that the Africans were been cheated and maltreated in their own land. The learned assured the non-learned (illiterates) that they the literates could better handle the Africans affairs in the best interest of the African much more than what their colonial masters were doing.

Africa’s cry went well into ‘actions’ that led to the freedom of many states. Power was given to the natives to govern their own people in the best interest of the people.

Tasting power however, the trusted African leaders themselves turned their mandates into activities which led to a more terrible way of opposition even than during colonization, through bloody coup d’etats, which led to deaths of many senior citizens, mothers, innocent children and very important personalities.

Up to date, many of the learned Africans still insist that those in power (though Africans), are also not doing what is right and best for the people; and so are applying all ways and means of dethroning them from authority. One of the tactics being adopted by some opposition leaders are to turn little innocent children into army officers and rebels who kill to survive and achieve their aim.

Some of the Africans who witnessed the colonial days believe that life would have been better off today than it is if the Whiteman continued to rule till date. They talked and showed commitments to the shops and availability, affordability and quality of commodities of the white man as compared to the African markets and commodities today.

If one intends to well deliberate events of today as per the opinions of some old people as well as messages of learned governments’ oppositions concerning how their colleagues in power rule, then one is tempted to say, accept or believe a saying that the Blackman is not capable of managing his own affairs.

However, the apartheid we heard of, read about and experienced as Africans in the hands of the colonial masters in South Africa, attests to the fact that if colonization extended to these days, it might have been a disaster for us as Africans, but the mistrust amongst the learned who persuaded the illiterates to support them many years back to rise against the white rule means that:

either it is not easy to rule, or

The rulers are destined to cheat/misrule, or

The ruled must always keep quiet when anything (bad) happens.

Did Africans therefore need to blame the white man?

And is the Blackman capable of managing his own affairs?

In Africa today, almost everybody wants to own a mobile phone. The reasons for the need of a mobile phone vary from one person to another.

Some people use their phones for businesses, others use theirs for very unacceptable purposes. No one has the right to prevent anybody from having a phone.

However, if I am given the chance, I would have tried every means possible to prevent people under 18 years from using mobile phones.

Some of the reasons are that, since there must be the need to always activate one’s credit account, all ways and means are being devised to acquire money for this purpose. Young teenage girls as you may know use every means possible to get a mobile phone, make sure to always activate their credit account with enough money as well as even aiming to get/own more complex brands.

It is something I will like to alert you as to how I know of mobile phones in today’s Ghana and else where. What do you also know of mobile phones; their acquisition, uses and main purposes?
